ABSTRACT

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart over time produced by an electrocardiograph and is a very useful source of information for physicians in diagnosing heart diseases and abnormalities. With the increasing use of ECG in heart diagnosis; the volume of ECG data that should be stored or transmitted has increased tremendously. Therefore it is necessary to use some effective means of data reduction in order to decrease the storage cost or to make the ECG signal suitable for transmission through common communication channels such as phone lines or mobile channels. The goal when compressing and transmitting data over the network is to make the data sent as small as possible so that it can be transmitted faster over the network. Another important aspect is that as much as possible of the original information must be retained while dealing with medical information for proper disease diagnosis. Compression methods are either lossless with low compression ratio, or lossy with higher compression ratios but without perfect reconstruction. Read more…
